Renault will limit maximum speed to 180 km/h in new cars

Renault has confirmed that it will electronically limit the maximum speed of its new cars by 180 km/h starting in 2022. The change will be made to reduce the number of traffic accidents. The decision reaches both the next models of the French automaker and those of the Romanian Dacia, which belongs to the group.

The German magazine Spiegel was the first to report Renault’s decision. “Speed control is not the only solution, but it’s worth it if you can save even a human life,” said Luca de Meo, CEO of the group, at a shareholder meeting last week.

To impose maximum speed on vehicles, the French automaker will introduce a new system, called “Safety Coach”, which will adjust the acceleration limit taking into account different aspects such as road and climate. The tool must debut for the first time in the production version of the Renault Mégane eVision Concept, which is expected to arrive in 2021.

Renault’s decision follows the same initiative made by Volvo last year, which also limits the speed of its cars at 180 km/h by default. The measure generated criticism, but the Swedish automaker ignored the comments and said in an official statement that “if the action can save lives, the loss of customers will not be a problem.”

In Europe, the speed limit of most roads is 130 to 140 km/h

The decision reaches the brand new vehicles, so far, only in models in Europe. There is still no information if the measure will be extended to other continents. However, it will be no surprise if it is a global decision and that is adopted by other manufacturers soon, mainly Nissan and Mitsubishi, because of their alliance with Renault.
